What is Water Cooled Condenser?

The water-cooled condenser unit is a kind of heat exchanger, use water as cooling medium, used to cool and convert high-temperature high-pressure vapor refrigerant to medium-temperature high-pressure refrigerant in water cooled condenser.

How Does a Water Cooled Condenser Work?

The water cooled condenser working principle is a process of heat exchange. The refrigeration compressor compresses the refrigerant and discharge the high-temperature high-pressure vapor refrigerant to water cooled refrigeration condenser, the vapor refrigerant pass through the water cooled condenser coil, causing the temperature to drop. As the temperature drops, the heat of the refrigerant vapor is transferred to the refrigerant medium, so the high-temperature refrigerant vapor is cooled and condensed.

What Are The Types of Water Cooled Condenser?

There are three major water cooled condenser types, brazed heat exchange condenser, coaxial water cooled condenser, shell and coil water cooled condenser. They are 3 major types of standard refrigeration water cooled condenser for commercial refrigeration.

What is Brazed Plate Heat Exchanger?

Brazed plate heat exchangers are one of the 3 types of water cooled condensers. It is composed of front cover plate, corrugated plates, end cover plate. Each plate is composed of two layers of sheet metal, connected by brazing technology.

How Does a Brazed Plate Heat Exchanger Work?

The brazed plate heat exchanger has two channels, one is for refrigerant, the other is for water. The plate heat exchanger working principle is to use the brazing technology in the plate heat exchanger to transfer and exchange the heat generated between the refrigerant and water.

The heat exchange process mainly includes inlet, diversion, heat exchange, and outlet of the refrigeration and water.

Water inlet: The chilled water comes into the brazed plate heat exchanger channel.

Water diversion: The water in the channel will be divided into multiple small channels.

Refrigerant inlet: The high-temperature high-pressure refrigerant comes into the brazed plate heat changer channel.

Refrigerant diversion: The refrigerant in the channel will be divised into multiple small channels.

Heat exchange of the refrigerant and water: The refrigerant and water pass through their channels, exchanging heat between the plates.

Water outlet: After heat exchange, water comes out of the plate heat exchanger, go back to water loop system.

Refrigerant outlet: After condensation, the medium-temperature high-pressure refrigerant goes into filter dryer.

What’s the Advantages of Brazed Plate Heat Exchanger?

Brazed plate heat exchangers have the advantages of compact structure, small footprint, high heat transfer efficiency, strong operational flexibility, wide application range, small heat loss, and easy installation.

However, because the channel on the water side of the plate heat exchanger is too narrow, it is easy to scale and blockage at high temperatures. So it has high requirements of cooling water quality.

What Is Coaxial Water Cooled Condenser?

The coaxial heat exchanger, is also called tube in tube water cooled condenser. It is one kind of 3 types of water cooled condensers. It is consists of spiral fluted inner tube and an outer tube. The chilled water flows through the inner tube, and the refrigerant flows through the outer tube.

How Does a Coaxial Water Cooled Condenser Work?

The coaxial water cooled condenser is composed of concentric inner tube and outer tube. The inner tube is for chilled water, and the outer tube is for high-temperature high-pressure vapor refrigerant, flowing in opposite directions.

When the chilled water and vapor refrigerant flow through the inner tube and outer tube to transfer and exchange the heat generated between the refrigerant and water.

What’s the Advantages of Coaxial Water Cooled Condenser?

  • Compared with Brazed plate heat exchanger, the coaxial water cooled condenser has low water quality requirements relatively. The water side flow channel has a larger size, it is not easy to scale and blockage.
  • The water flow tube has strong spiral turbulence, and it is not easy to scale;
  • There is no vertical channel in the refrigerant flow, so the oil can return to the compressor safely.
  • It has the features of high heat exchange efficiency.
  • It has a wide range of applications, and the material of the heat exchange tube can be selected according to the use environment.

What Is Shell and Tube Water Cooled Condenser?

The water cooled shell and tube condenser is composed of shell, heat transfer tube bundles(refrigerant tubes), tube sheets, and baffles (baffles). The shell is mostly cylindrical, with a tube bundle installed inside, and both ends of the tube bundle are fixed on the tube plate. There is two fluids of refrigerant and water for heat exchange. Refrigerant flows inside the tube and water flows outside of the tube.

How Does a Shell and Tube Water Cooled Condenser Work?

Shell and tube water cooled condenser work principle is that the high-temperature high-pressure refrigerant flows into the inside tubes and water flows into the outside of tube to exchange heat. Refrigerant release the heat to the water and water absorbs heat from refrigerant through the tube wall.

What’s the Advantages of Shell and Tube Water Cooled Condenser?

  • Has good corrosion resistance
  • Compact structure. The heat transfer area per unit volume is large. The total heat transfer coefficient is high, the floor space is greatly reduced, and materials and space are saved.
  • It has good anti-fouling properties and no impurities will remain inside or outside the tube wall, which greatly reduces the number of equipment maintenance times and ensures a stable heat transfer coefficient and long-term operation.
  • Not easy to leak
  • Easy to install

What Are Water Cooled Condenser Applications?

Water cooled condensers are widely used in air conditioning, heat pump, industrial refrigeration, commercial refrigeration and so on.

What’s the Difference Between Air Cooled vs Water Cooled Condenser?

Air cooled condensers use air as cooling medium, while water cooled condensers use water as cooling medium.

Because water has higher heat capacity than that of air, therefore, water has stronger ability to transfer heat than air. The water cooled condenser has better heat dissipation effect and dissipate heat more effectively than air cooled condenser. That’s why the water cooled condensing unit has better cooling effect than the air cooled condensing unit.
