Rail Standards

26 Aug.,2023

The rail industry is faced with mounting competitive and cost pressures that call for significant improvements such as visibility of rolling stock in real time as well as improving safety and efficiency in the rail industry.

To respond to these business needs, GS1 has partnered with the the rail industry hto develop three application standards:

NEW Exchange of component/part lifecycle data in the rail industry

This new application standard addresses the exhange of visibility event data for lifecycle tracking of crucial and safety relevant MRO-objects across manufacturing, maintenance, repair and overhaul processes.

The document builds on the foundation of the already established by the Identification of Components and Parts in the Rail Industry application standard (see below), and explains how to implement GS1's EPCIS standard to exchange of component/part lifecycle data in the rail industry.

Application standard: "Exchange of component/part lifecycle data in the rail industry"

Identification of components and parts in the rail industry

This application standard provides detailed rules on the identification and marking of parts and components used in manufacturing, maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) processes. This can deliver significant benefits to stakeholder in the rail industry, such as improving the performance and safety of their operations.

Vehicle Visibility Standard

The GS1 EPCIS for Rail Vehicle Visibility application standard allows rail stakeholders to leverage EPCIS to obtain complete visibility of rolling stock in real-time. The standard enables rail operators, infrastructure companies and even cargo owners to share information about the physical location and movement of individual rail vehicles and entire trains as they travel from country to country.
