China is preparing to extend green electricity consumption requirements to a wider range of industries, aiming to strengthen renewable energy use through an expanded green certificate system. The move follows a major milestone: China’s Green Power Certificate (GPC) recently received unconditional recognition from RE100, a leading global initiative committed to 100% renewable electricity. Officials see this as a sign of growing international trust in China’s green power tracking system.

At a promotional event held in Shenzhen on May 12, Wan Jinsong, Deputy Director of the National Energy Administration, announced plans to promote mandatory GPC consumption, improve the renewable energy quota mechanism, and establish sector-specific green power targets. “RE100’s recognition marks a turning point for China’s green certificate on the global stage,” Wan said.

Green certificates serve multiple purposes. Companies can use them to power major events, brand their facilities as green, and strengthen ESG and CSR reporting. They also support energy use accounting, renewable quota compliance, and carbon footprint calculations, especially in energy-intensive sectors like aluminum smelting.

Zheng Ying, Director at Beijing Dianlian Technology, noted that as China expands its manufacturing footprint in Southeast Asia and other Belt and Road countries, the green certificate system can be exported along with it—meeting growing demand for verified green electricity in overseas markets. “Our system can grow internationally alongside Chinese industry,” Zheng said.
