What Is Custom Jewelry?

Custom jewelry can be a ring, necklace, bracelet, earrings, or any other piece that’s made to meet an individual’s design, taste, and budget specifications. Often, custom jewelry includes both precious metal and diamonds or gemstones. Custom engagement rings are one of the most popular types of custom jewelry, ensuring the wearer has a unique piece designed specifically for their tastes that they’ll love forever. Some customers ask for custom jewelry with all new metals and gemstones, while other customers bring in their own jewelry to repurpose into a custom piece.

If you’re in the market for a custom ring, the cost can vary tremendously, but rest assured, our jewelers can work with any budget to design the ring of your dreams. In many cases, custom rings, particularly diamond engagement rings, have intricate settings, diamond- or gem-encrusted bands, and large center stones, all of which can cost anywhere from a few thousand dollars to more than $30,000. The cost is considerably less if you supply your own stones from heirloom jewelry or bring in a ring to reset.

How Much Do Other Types of Custom Jewelry Cost?

Necklaces, bracelets, earrings, and other types of custom jewelry can cost anywhere from $350 up into the thousands. The average range tends to be around $2,000 to $3,000, but we’re happy to work with any budget to create the specific piece of jewelry you are envisioning.

Do I Need an Appointment for a Consultation?

We want the process to work for you, so we try to accommodate your schedule. We’re happy to set an appointment with you to discuss what you have in mind for your custom jewelry piece. Or, if you happen to be in the neighborhood and want to stop in for a quick consultation, we can do that, too.

How Long Does It Take To Create a Custom Piece of Jewelry?

The exact amount of time we’ll need to create your specific piece of jewelry will depend on a couple of factors, like the intricacy of your design, any tweaks to the design throughout the process, and our jeweler’s availability. However, most pieces take between four and six weeks to complete from the first consultation to the finished product.

Can You Use My Own Materials?

We’re happy to create your custom piece of jewelry using your own diamonds, gemstones, or metals. We know how important family heirlooms are, and we’ll treat your treasured jewelry, stones, bands, or chains with care as we repurpose them into your new design. Do be aware, however, that some metals cannot be repurposed due to degradation of materials or the inability to melt them down. We’re happy to discuss the specifics of your piece when you come in for your consultation.

Can You Create a Copy of a Piece of Jewelry I Like?

We’re happy to use other jewelry pieces you like as inspiration, but we’ll find a way to add your unique aesthetic to it to keep it original. When you come for your consultation, bring any pictures of other jewelry pieces you love, so we can get an idea of what shapes, colors, and other design elements speak to you.

What Should I Bring to a Consultation?

Bring any inspiration you have for your piece of jewelry. Common resources include images, other jewelry pieces, colors, and magazine clippings. If you’re hoping to include any diamonds or gemstones you already own, bring those to your initial consultation as well. When you arrive at your consultation, be ready to discuss your budget as well as aesthetics. Our designers are excellent at what they do, and we’re confident we can help you create the perfect piece regardless of how much you want to spend.

What Does the Process of Creating a Custom Piece of Jewelry Look Like?

Usually, the custom jewelry process takes five steps: consultation, sketching, CAD rendering, modeling, and manufacturing.

Consultation

During your consultation, you’ll meet with a designer to discuss your project. They’ll ask about your preferred metals and gemstones, general aesthetic, and budget to help create a custom design that meets your specific needs.

Sketching

Using that information, the designer will create sketches to present to you for review. Depending on what you discuss during your consultation, they might offer a few options for you to decide between. You can also ask for tweaks to the sketches before moving forward in the process.

Rendering

After you’ve approved the sketch, the designer uses computer-aided design, or CAD, programs to create a 3D rendering of your piece. During this part of the process, you can request several different mock-ups to compare side by side or ask for renderings featuring different metals or gems.

Modeling

Following the 3D rendering, the designer and jeweler will make a wax model of your jewelry. This way, you can see the exact size and shape of the piece, and in the case of rings, try it on to ensure it fits. This is your final opportunity to request any changes to the piece.

Manufacturing

Finally, the jeweler will create your custom piece, working with the wax model as a guide, and using your preselected metals and gemstones. Once we’ve cast the metal, set the stone, and polished the piece, it will be yours to take home.
