An interchange mop head is a mop that is bought without a fixed handle already attached to it. The user then has to purchase a compatible handle to fix in the headband of the mop. The interchange mop offers flexibility to the user as it gives him/ her an opportunity to choose between various interchange handle that the market offers. Basically, a 16 oz mop head is a medium sized mop head that is suited for domestic use and covering medium sized areas.
Classes of the 16 oz. interchange mops.
An interchange mop head can either be a looped end or cut end. A looped end mop head has its yarns attached using a band closer to the base of the mop, whereas a cut end has its yarns split into groups of three or four when in use.
Advantages of a looped interchange mop head
• The mop does not leave lint or gaps during cleaning.
• The mop can cover up to twice the area in less than the time as compared to an ordinary mop.
• The yarns of the mop can last up to eight times longer than the cut end mop heads.
• Since the yarns are much closer together they are more absorbent, therefore suitable for wet mopping.
• Their design makes it possible to be laundered.
The main disadvantage is that they are more expensive compared to the interchange mop heads designed with cut-ends.
Advantages of using a cut-end mop in the cleaning industry.
• The mops are less expensive on the market.
• They are more disposable.
However, the cut end has notable disadvantages such as the mops leaving lint and gaps during cleaning. Consequently, more time is needed to clean a given area. Moreover, the cut-end interchange mops have a limited option of yarns to choose from, which can also not be laundered.
The common types of yarn fibres used to make the interchange mop head 16oz.
There are five common types of materials used in the manufacture of yarns fibres. These are cotton, rayon, synthetic, blends and microfiber material. Each of the material is best suited to perform a particular function.
Cotton yarn.
Cotton yarn fibre based interchange mop head is used for absorbing liquids from floors and surfaces. It can also be used for moderate scrubbing. Interchange mop heads made of these cotton yarns have a very high absorption capacity that can be utilized in wet moping. The mops are also mid- end, therefore, it is economical to purchase one of these. The demerits of using such a mop is that it leaves lint on smooth surfaces. These interchange mop heads have an approximation of 30-45-minute breakdown. If care is not taken, there could be mildew growth on the cotton fibres.
Rayon fibre yarns.
Interchange mops made of rayon fibres are used for applying liquids such as floor finish, disinfectants, and floor stripper to the surface being cleaned. The rayon fibres have a good absorbent rate but with a quick release. That enables them to dry faster when washed. They are good for cleaning smooth surfaces such as tiled walls as they leave considerably little lint behind. A key advantage over the interchange cotton mops is that it is mildew resistant and does not have a break-in period. However, the mop has very poor retention and often shrinks when laundered.
Synthetic fibre yarns Synthetic fibre yarns are used to manufacture the interchange mop heads which are used for rough surfaces. They have a far much superior strength as compared to all the other interchange mop heads. They also have no break-in period and leaves no lint behind. Fewer people use these interchange mops because they are costlier and have a poor retention.
Microfiber yarns.
Microfiber yarns are used in the interchange mop heads since they have a superior bacterial removal property. The mops can last up to six times longer than the traditional mops. They are reusable and can be washed up to 500 times without weakening its fibres. It is important to note that a different set of interchange handles, frames and bucket will be required as it is not compatible with the standard equipment. These interchange mop heads are mainly used for industrial purposes, especially in food processing industry.
Blended fibres.
Lastly, there are the interchange mops with yarns made from a blend of the above fibres. The blended yarns have a variety of properties and use depending on the type of blending materials used. In general, these interchange mops are used by professionals who require long lasting mops such as in hospitals and building service contractors.
Advantages of using interchange mop head with blended yarns.
• They have a very high performance.
• They can be laundered multiple times.
• They are durable and cost effective.
Note: If the blended yarns are not pre-shrunk during manufacturing, they can have a high shrinkage rate the first time, especially if cold water is used in cleaning.
What is a yarn layout?
It is also important to consider the yarn layout that was used in making the 16 oz. interchange mop head. That is how the individual yarn fibres are placed in relationship to one another. The layering can either be a twist or yarn ply. Tight twist gives strongest fibres, but the absorbency decreases considerably. Loose twist has a much higher absorbency, but they have lesser strength. They are therefore not durable after all.
Yarn Ply is the number of plies twisted together to make a single strand. The number of plies ranges from three to eight. As a general rule, the more the number of strands twisting, the longer the interchange mop head will last, and the decrease in the absorption capacity of the mop.
Does the tail band matter when considering the appropriate 16oz. interchange mop head?
Interchange mop heads with tail bands are better placed regarding increasing the floor coverage and overall efficiency and productivity. In addition to that, the strands which are held together acquire and adequate firmness which extends the mop life. The laudability of the mop will become much better.
