Fix Overtightening Problems

Proper installation of fittings and valves is critical to maintaining a well-maintained system.
Most people would consider under-tightening to be a common suspect for system leaks. The truth is that workers will more often than not overtighten because they are concerned about not tightening enough. They would rather overtighten to ensure a strong connection than not apply enough force.
You can identify an overtightened compression fitting or valve by following these four methods


1. If you are unable to remove the fitting

It is common for workers to disassemble compression connections during maintenance. After loosening the nut, the tubing should come off easily. After disassembly, if the tube is not yet bonded to the fitting, check the fitting for signs of overtightening. If the collar is too firm, the tube will expand and stick to the inside of the fitting. If you are unable to remove the valve or fitting, the connection is too tight.
In this case, the only thing to do is to remove and replace the faulty fitting. In addition, you will need to replace any lines that cannot be removed from the fitting.

2. Deformed fittings or tubing

If proper tightening procedures are not followed, the pipe or fitting may be deformed. To identify this on a fitting, look at the wrench flats of the fitting. If the corners begin to round, the fitting is likely stretched tight.
On the tubing, it is difficult to see this distortion without removing the fitting. Inside the fitting, the collar will begin to squeeze the pipe. This, in turn, will restrict flow and thin the pipe wall. The subsequent increase in local pressure and weakening of the pipe will result in a catastrophic release of the pipe from the compression fitting.


3. What to do if a valve ruptures

Look for cracks near the valve connection point, which may be a sign of over-tightening. Although valve breakage is a rare occurrence, never underestimate a well-trained installer using a large wrench.
This is a severely over-tightened threaded needle valve.
Unfortunately, if a compression valve or fitting suffers this kind of damage from overtightening, you should replace it.


4. You start leaking

It may seem self-explanatory, but if you are experiencing leaks, now is the best time to check for over-tightened connections. First, check the mating gap with a gap gauge to rule out an untightened condition. If your gauges don't fit, it's time to start looking for other signs of overtightening.
