The Difference Between A Lug And Wafer Butterfly Valve

Butterfly Valve has existed for a long time and has a wide range of applications. They first appeared in the 1930s and have been used by many industries since then. Butterfly Valves are usually made of cast iron and the name comes from the functionality of the disc. There are several different types of butterfly valves, however, they are divided into two basic types-lug and wafer valves.

Lug Butterfly Valve

Connected to threaded inserts on both sides of the valve body, lug butterfly valves are suitable for installation in systems with two sets of bolts without nuts. The valve must be installed between two flanges, each with a separate set of bolts. With this setting, each side of the piping system can be disconnected without interfering with the other side.

Wafer butterfly valve

Wafer-type butterfly valve is one of the most commonly used butterfly valve types. The wafer type butterfly valve body has no connecting flange, and the butterfly valve is connected between the pipe flanges on both sides by stud bolts, and the butterfly valve is clamped by the pipe flange and the connecting bolts.

The structure length of the wafer type butterfly valve is the shortest, and the driving method is usually the handle type and the turbine worm drive, and the smaller diameter butterfly valve is usually the handle type.

Wafer butterfly valve is simple in structure, small in size and light in weight, and only consists of a few parts. And it only needs to rotate 90° to open and close quickly. When the butterfly valve is in the fully open position, the pressure drop generated by the valve is very small, so it has better flow control characteristics.

Features

1. Small and lightweight, easy to disassemble and maintain, and can be installed in any position.

2. The structure is simple and compact, and the 900-turn opening and closing is quick.

3. Small operating torque, labor-saving and lightweight.

4. The flow characteristics tend to be straight, and the adjustment performance is good.

5. The number of opening and closing tests is up to tens of thousands, and the service life is long.

6. To achieve complete sealing, the gas test leakage is zero.

7. Choose different parts and materials, which can be applied to a variety of media.

Function

The function of the wafer butterfly valve is to maintain the seal to prevent bidirectional pressure in fluid flow. In other words, the wafer butterfly valve is designed to be tightly sealed to prevent two-way differential pressure to avoid any backflow in a system manufactured for one-way flow. This is achieved by using tightly embedded seals such as o-rings, gaskets, precision machining and flat faces on downstream and upstream parts of the valve.

Conclusion

Both lug and wafer butterfly valves are wildly used in various industrial sector, including food processing, pharmaceutical, chemical, petroleum, water and wastewater management. In many industries, butterfly valves have mostly replaced ball valves. This is especially true for companies that handle oil because they are cheaper and easier to install.
