Shanxi Province, a cornerstone of China’s coal industry, produced 325.41 million tonnes of coal in the first quarter of 2025, up 19.1% year-on-year, according to the National Bureau of Statistics. The sharp increase in output far exceeded that of other major coal-producing regions: Inner Mongolia saw a modest 1.9% rise to 330.74 million tonnes, Shaanxi’s output grew 3.8% to 184.53 million tonnes, and Xinjiang reported a 12.4% increase to 142.24 million tonnes.

Shanxi has long contributed more than a quarter of China’s total coal production. The strong rebound in Q1 was partly due to a low base last year, when output fell sharply due to a nationwide campaign targeting overproduction. With regulatory constraints eased, production has steadily recovered. This recovery has also helped accelerate broader industrial activity in the province.

In the first quarter, value-added output from Shanxi’s large industrial firms rose 7.7% from a year earlier—marking a significant acceleration from last year’s full-year pace. Output in the coal sector itself rose 8.7%, underscoring its role in supporting the province’s overall growth.

The surge in Shanxi's output contributed to a record-breaking start to the year for the national coal industry. Between January and March, China produced a total of 1.2 billion tonnes of coal, up 8.1% year-on-year—a new high for the period. Officials say stable output in coal-heavy provinces like Shanxi remains crucial for safeguarding the country’s energy supply and ensuring steady economic momentum.
