Guangdong is giving electric vehicle owners a new way to earn money—by selling electricity back to the grid. On May 14, the provincial Development and Reform Commission released a policy setting time-based buyback rates for vehicle-to-grid (V2G) power transfers.
Under the new rules, EVs that send electricity to the grid during peak demand hours can earn up to RMB 0.7701 per kilowatt-hour, with payouts rising to RMB 0.9626/kWh during critical peak periods. The rates follow a time-of-use model, calculated by applying a multiplier to a base rate of RMB 0.453/kWh:1.7× for peak hours,1.0× for standard hours,0.38× for off-peak hours,Critical peak hours carry a 25% premium on top of the peak rate.
Critical peak pricing applies during July, August, and September, as well as on any other day when the forecast high temperature in Guangzhou hits 35°C or above. The official temperature is taken from the next-day forecast aired during the 7 p.m. Xinwen Lianbo broadcast on CCTV-1. The special rate is then applied the following day during two key time slots: 11:00–12:00 and 15:00–17:00.
The policy applies to qualified V2G pilot projects and eligible charging or battery swap stations in Guangzhou and Shenzhen, as certified by local authorities. It takes effect immediately and will run on a trial basis through December 31, 2026.
