Construction has begun on the first foundation for the 500kV supporting transmission line of the Gansu-Zhejiang ultra-high voltage direct current (UHVDC) project, located in Moushan Town, Yuyao, Ningbo. The milestone marks the official launch of the first outbound project associated with the UHVDC line in Zhejiang. Once in operation, it is expected to help drive Zhejiang’s shift toward a cleaner energy mix.
The ±800kV Gansu-Zhejiang line is a flagship project under China’s 14th Five-Year Plan for power development and is the world’s first flexible UHVDC transmission system. When completed, it will deliver up to 36 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity annually from Gansu to Zhejiang—over 21 billion kilowatt-hours of which will come from renewable sources. In addition to easing pressure on the eastern grid, the project is expected to spur more than 80 billion yuan in investment across the energy value chain, unlocking western China’s resource potential while supporting power security in the east.
“Yuyao is a critical corridor for the transmission line to pass through Zhejiang,” said Yu Kejie, head of project management at State Grid Zhejiang Ningbo Electric Power Company. The project will connect ten UHVDC lines to five 500kV substations, with four of the five lines running through Yuyao. Over 70% of the total transmission length within Ningbo will be located in this area. The entire Ningbo section, spanning 95.7 kilometers, is scheduled for completion by June 2027.
