Shanghai has put into operation the country’s first fully prefabricated substation, marking a national milestone in substation construction. The 110kV Huancheng Substation is the first in China to feature entirely prefabricated structures both above and below ground, with a mechanization rate of 98%.

The substation occupies 2,400 square meters, with a total floor area of 2,525 square meters. Its underground section uses prefabricated concrete modules, while the above-ground structure is made of prefabricated steel components. Shanghai Electric Power Transmission & Transformation Engineering Co. employed Building Information Modeling (BIM) to manage the project, enabling high-precision coordination and control throughout the construction process. Over 700 components were prefabricated—achieving a prefabrication rate of 90%—and BIM was key to resolving complex clashes among various utility pipelines.

From excavation to structural hoisting, the entire process was managed through real-time visualization tools, reaching millimeter-level precision. The approach significantly improved construction safety, efficiency, and quality, setting a new benchmark for future substation projects in China.
