Double Strollers – Both Sides of the Story |
Although some families opt to have two different single strollers and have each parent take a stroller, this may not work out for all families. And for those days you are ‘flying solo’ without your spouse or other family member or friend, double strollers can provide you the flexibility to go out on your own and enjoy your time with your small children.
The Benefits of Double Strollers
Double strollers have many benefits to the parents who use them. One such benefit is that they are available in two major configurations. One is the side-by-side style, and the other is the tandem style. The side-by-side style is a wide ride. Your children sit next to each other so both can equally see what is happening around them. This style is easier to move around but harder to get through doors because of the extra width. The tandem style has one child sitting in front of the other. Some strollers designed in this fashion offer ‘stadium seating’ so the child in the rear seat can see in front of the child in the front seat. The tandem style is a bit more difficult to steer because of the length.
Double strollers have plenty of places to sneak some extra storage in as well. You can hang items from the handlebars. There are several types of stroller accessories which do just that, from hooks for your pocketbook or diaper bag to cup holders for your beverages. Some companies make snack trays which can be attached either in the handlebar area or the bumper bar area so snacks or small toys can be handy for both mom and the children. There are stroller saddlebags which mount to the sides of your double stroller. And of course the under seat storage baskets are great if your stroller has that feature. Some tandem strollers do not have such baskets, but have foot rests for the children instead.
The Downside of Double Strollers
Double strollers also have their downsides, however. Since they are larger than their single seat counterparts, they are heavier and more difficult to lift. Their size also makes them a bit harder to maneuver for some parents. The side-by-side style of double stroller may be more difficult to handle in a crowded situation or through doorways. All double strollers take up a bit more space when collapsed for storage. This may make keeping one in your car trunk a little more difficult if you need to transport your double stroller as well as luggage.
If you have twins or two small children and are looking for a way to enjoy a day out with them, double strollers are a wonderful way to do so. Knowing the benefits of the side-by-side and tandem double strollers will help you make the best choice for your family and your lifestyle.
